Apatite & Calcite

Classic Locality

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Liscombe Deposit, Monmouth Township, Haliburton County, Ontario, Canada
Class:
Crystals on Matrix
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
4.8 × 4.5 × 2.2 cm
Description

The locality is well known for Fluorapatite - a common piece is opac, well saturated in green to yellow green color and mostly embedded in mother rock. The locality was active at most in the 70ties, so even common material is hard to obtain, even pale crystals or opac crystals are pretty rare. But what we have here is completely different - the crystal is free-standing and - this is the really important indicator - it is transparent and gemmy. The color is almost neon - not just pale yellow or light green, this intensity is really crazy and in combination with the glassy character this piece is really exceptional. I like Apatite very much and next to Fluorite it is one of my favorite minerals - so I have a good overview of the top-qualities from well known, classic localities. I have to say that I never saw such transperent, intense colored crystal - and it is exposed on matrix; very very aesthetic! Matrix is light Calcite with touch of ivory color.
