Phosgenite

Classic Locality

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Monteponi Mine, Iglesias, Carbonia-Iglesias Province, Sardinia, Italy
Class:
Single Crystal
Size Range:
Small miniature (3-4.5 cm)
Size:
3 × 2 × 2.3 cm
Description

Beautiful single crystal of phosgenite from Monteponi, a classic Sardinian locality well known for the magnificent samples of phosgenite and anglesite found here in the last century. Access to the extraction areas, now flooded, is impossible and it has been a few decades since it is no longer possible to find new material. This crystal shows a very small contact area with the matrix and could be almost described as free-floating.
It shows a chip on one side (photo 5) due to the detachment of a fragment but this does not diminish its aesthetics. On two sides you can see the vertical streaks, typical of this mineral and a natural triangular-shaped  face.

It will arrive, inside a clear bell with a white plastic base but it is easily removable.

A nice sample of the "gone days".
