Description

Uncommon specimen and of good size is this block of olivine leucitite, featuring well-formed olivine crystals, floating in a matrix of the volcanic rock. The olive-green olivine crystals are well preserved at the internal parts, but the crystals directly located near the natural fractures were submitted to an intense replacement process, forming good red-brick coloured pseudomorphs of iddingsite after olivine.

Olivine “Iddingsitization” is a common alteration process of olivine, often observed in thin sections, but this specimen is intensely transformed to iddingsite (a mixture of smectite & chlorite clay minerals, iron oxides and ferrihydrites) at both sides of the tabular specimen.

Self-collected in 11/1995.
