Gmelinite With Analcime & Natrolite

Type Locality

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Little Deerpark Quarry, Glenarm, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom
Size Range:
Small cabinet (7-10 cm)
Size:
8 × 7 × 6 cm
Description

Although this specimen has good coloured gmelinite crystals (type locality) with sprays of well terminated stocky natrolite crystals on top, it is more interesting for the unusual analcime crystals on the reverse side. Analcime is a common zeolite, but not so when it comes as black crystals. In this specimen a 3cm wide vug is lined with colourless analcime crystals with a mound of the black crystals in the centre. The vug also contains about 6 tiny gmelinite crystals with a particularly strong colour. Black analcime occurs uncommonly at this location. Sometimes a dark matrix can make clear crystals appear black when observe through them, however these crystals are still black when observed from the side indicating true black material .
