Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Høgetveit Feldspar Quarry, Evje og Hornnes, Agder, Norway
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
6.5 × 4.5 × 3 cm
Description

Black aggregates of the very rare Keiviite-Y sitting in feldspar (member of a Y,Yb-silicate series). It partly exhibits some pink internal reflexes.

This mineral was first described as Thalenite by Schetelig (1931) at this locality and it later showed to be a beta-phase of Y2Si2O7 with a Thortveitite-structure (Neumann 1985). This is identical with the mineral described as Keiviite-Y from Kola, Russia by Voloshin et al (1983) – see also on mindat.org.

The specimen is followed by an old label of the Mineralogical-Geological Museum in Oslo, dated March 1952, still saying „Thalenite“.
