Apatite With Siderite

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Panasqueira Mines, Covilhã, Castelo Branco District, Portugal
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
6 × 2.5 × 2.5 cm
Description

This is a lustrous, almost gem apatite crystal on top of matrix of muscovite, which hosts a cleaved crystal of siderite on the end. I normally avoid cleaved crystals, but here it's obvious the result is fantastic! If this crystal hadn't been cleaved,we would never be able to see the umber yellow gemmy core of the crystal! Since the result is natural and collectors have to tolerate polishing on specimens that are not well visible without this treatment, like agates for example, I feel that here the "defect" is actually an advantage! No damage!
