Small miniature (3-4.5 cm)

Description

This is an excellent specimen hosting deep honey brown retzian-Ce crystals in vugs of the matrix.

First described by Sjögren (1894) as a new mineral from Mossgruvan (Moss Mine), Nordmark, Värmland, Sweden. Later, Moore (1968) presented crystallographic data. Re-examination of the type material by Duun & Sturman (1982) showed this to be Ce-rich, and they redefined and renamed retzian as retzian-(Ce), in accordance with Levinson's rules. Named after Anders Jahon Retzius (1742-1821), Swedish naturalist and Professor of Botany plus the -(Ce) suffix due to the dominance of Ce in the composition. (mindat)
