Description

Terrestrial native iron is very rare. You can find more native iron in meteorites. This is a large cut slice (surely the biggest one available for a reasonable price) from one of the rarest finds ever - together with - according to Mindat and Mineralienatlas - the also (terrestrial) rare iron carbide cohenite. But collector and author Klaus Belendorff confirmed, that those entries should be corrected. He is sure that the iron is accompanied by troilite, a native iron protosulphide, related to the species pyrrhotite and smythite.

The specimen was found by Klaus' grandfather, who himself worked in the ancient quarry, in 1917. The ancient quarry was mined until 1925, when it was flooded. Today it is a swimming pond.
