Description

Gold (electrum) in quartz from Kuranui Hill, Thames bonanza goldfield, New Zealand. Sample has cut face revealing dendritic electrum. The sample comes from near the original discovery location of gold rich reefs at Thames which were initially discovered in a waterfall exposure in Kuranui Creek (8th August 1867) and became the site of the Shotover claim. Mining at Thames encountered 6 main bonanzas as well as numerous smaller and localised gold-rich pockets. The gold finess of electrum is reported by Fraser 1910 for the Thames area as 0.625 to 0.75 and avearges 0.67 for the bonanzas. This sample was discovered in more recent times (~last 30 years).
