Description

The Parker Shaft of the Franklin Mine is the type and only known locality for esperite (unless you count specimens dispersed in the dumps as other “localities”) apart from the El Dragón mine in Bolivia. It was apparently locally abundant in the Parker shaft, but overall extremely rare in the mine – now long gone.

Esperite is one of the brightest fluorescent minerals from Franklin, but not easy to photograph accurately. (I have never seen a specimen from Bolivia and have no idea if material from there fluoreseces as well.)

The first pair of photos is probably the most accurate – the esperite looks lemony yellow as it should. The other photos are earlier attempts and the eperite came out a bit too “canary” yellow and even a bit orangey.  The willemite in all the photos came out a bit to “grass green”.

The first UV photo was made using ISO 200 at f8 with a 30 second exposure and AWB. The result didn’t look much like anything. But Photoshop “autolevels” immediately gave me an acceptable photo.

Of course, with SW, you can make esperite (or whatever) look as bright as you want. Will it look that bright in real life? All I can say is that, even with my wimpy UV source, it looks impressively bright and that the esperite is just about as bright as the willemite. This is a very good, rich, specimen of esperite.

In addition to the the esperite and willemite, there is franklinite, a large anhedral crystal of arsenopyrite or löllingite and some unidentified massive brown stuff.

This is a heavy item. Single item shipping weight (no case) is 22.7 oz. Note that USPS foreign packet rates recently increased significantly. It may be advantageous for foreign customers to hold an "open box" so as to reduce postage costs by combining items from a future auction. Let me know, and I will generate a new “item only” invoice. Postage will be invoiced when all items are actually shipped.

Outside the USA, the stated postage and packing rate applies up to a total weight of 32 oz (950 g).

Within the USA, I will use Priority Mail. Up to 32 oz, the “own box” Priority rate is $13 (including packing).

Please see my "Shipping Policy" for details.

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
