Description

Here I got something very crazy for you: These are tartrate crystals in wine, known as "Weinstein" in German. While tartrates can crystallize in young wines, they are most likely to precipitate in older, top-quality wines, such as Auslese, Beerenauslese or Trockenbeerenauslese. The tiny crystals that form on the bottom of the cork or on the sides of the bottles are the mark of a wine that has had the benefit of long bottle aging.

Tartrate is a mixture of salts of tartaric acid. Tartrate consists mainly of potassium hydrogen tartrate (molecular formula KC4H5O6) and calcium tartrate (molecular formula CaC4H4O6). Comes from the Schloss Ortenberg Winery close to Offenburg in the Black Forest.
