Small miniature (3-4.5 cm)

2.2 × 3 × 1.4 cm
Description

A textbook example of ultrahigh pressure associations, this is part of a pyrope megablast from the Dora-Maira unit. Coesite is a high-pressure polymorph of quartz that forms under extreme conditions like in Earth's mantle or meteoritic impacts, and terrestrial specimens are not easy to find. During exhumation from 70-100 km depth, the coesite grain underwent a volume expansion due to partial transformation in regular quartz. This results in the typical radial crack stress pattern we now see in the surrounding pyrope.
