Description

Baryte is a very rare mineral at MSH. The crystals on this specimen are small, but excellent for the locality. They are accompanied by abundant, spiky, strontianite balls and small, well formed, smoky quartz crystals. Strontianite is also fairly rare at MSH. This is very rich specimen for the locality. The matrix is a cavity in hornfels encrusted by “pebbly” calcite rhombs. For MSH, this is an outstanding example of both baryte and strontianite. In addition, the baryte was verified via EDS (see the “Analysis” tab).

The first pair of photos (FOV 2.3 x 3.3 mm) shows the best baryte group on the specimen. The individual crystals are <= 1.5 mm long. There are a few other baryte crystals on the specimen, but they are nearly colorless and hard to spot. The photo also shows a typical strontianite “ball” ca 1.5 mm in diameter.

The second pair of photos (FOV 3.4 x 4.5 cm) is on overview of the main part of the cavity. At this scale, the baryte group is hard to see, but you may be able to spot it to the left of the base of the vertical quartz crystal. But the abundant strontianite shows up fairly well, even though the color of the background (calcite) is similar.

The next two pairs of photos (FOV 4.6 x 6.4 and 4.2 x 6.9 mm resp.) are close-ups of two of the smoky quartz crystals and more of the strontiamite. The quartz crystal in the first of these pairs is 3.6 mm wide; the strontianite ball at top is 2.2 mm in diameter. In the second of these pairs of photos, the quartz crystal is 6.5 mm tall, and the strontianite balls is about 2.3 mm wide.

Single item shipping weight (no case) is 11.7 oz (332 g) . For shipments outside the USA, up to a total weight of 32 oz (950 g), this could be combined with other items from this or future auctions for the same postage. If you wish to keep an “open box”, let me know.

For shipments within the USA, there is a nominal increase of about $0.20 for each additional ounce. Above 13 oz I will use “own box” Priority Mai. The rate (including packing) is ca $9.25 up to 16 oz, ca $13.50 up to 32 oz (varies by destination).

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
