Description

This specimen features four rare to extremely rare minerals, three of which have MSH as the type locality. Of these, garronite-Na, a recent addition to the MSH species list, is known only from here. (The original “garronite” is now “garronite-Ca” and has not been reported from MSH.) This a very rich example of garronite-Na.

The other two type locality species on the specimen are calcioburbankite and petesrsenite-(Ce), both known from only three other localities (in seemingly inferior specimens). The other rarity is lanthanite-(Ce) which, on this specimen, is rather small, but very well formed.

The first pair of photos is a close-up of some of the largest crystals of garronite-Na. They are “lumpy” octahedral ca 0.5 mm in diameter. These photos are equivalent to 50-60X through a scope.

Thesecond pair of photos (FOV 2.4 x 3.6 mm) shows numerous pale blue-gray “lumpy” octahedral of garronite-Na to ca 0.4 mm. The light colored rectangular crystal peeking out in the upper right corner is lanthanite-(Ce). The background dark green aegirine and there is also a small crystal of siderite.
The third pair of photos (2.4 x 3.7 mm) shows the complete (orthorhombic) crystal of lanthanite-(Ce) along with more of the garronite-Na from the same cavity. There are also some other, smaller, cavities with garronite-Na on the specimen.

The fourth pair of photos (FOV 2.2 x 2.9 mm) show pale tan calciburbankite as a crust on petersenite-(CE0 (which can only be seen as the darker area on one termination. This is the most common type of occurrence for calcioburbankite at MSH. The longest petersenite cum calcioburbankite is 1.2 mm. In this case, even the termination is encrusted, which is rather unusual. The dark green background is aegirine.

The last macro photo has FOV ca 1.7 cm. It shows most of the garronite on the specimen

Single item shipping weight (no case) is 2.9 oz. Outside the USA, the stated postage and packing rate applies up to a total weight of 8 oz (225 g).

Within the USA, there is a nominal increase of $0.20 for each additional ounce. Above 13 oz, I will use Priority Mail. Up to 16 oz, the “own box” Priority rate is $9.25 (including packing).

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
