Description

This is an analyzed specimen – see the “Analysis” tab. At the qualitative EDS level, it is a good fit for parisite-(Ce). Morphologically it looks more like a “donnayite group” mineral. Possibly it is a pseudomorph. In any case, parisite-(Ce) is rare at MSH. The specimen features dozens of  parisite-(Ce)  “crystals” to about 0.6  mm. There is also a lot of tabular anatase, which MSH is well known for. This specimen features dozens of such crystals to ca 0.3 mm. (You will need 20-40X to view them.)

The first pair of photos (FOV 3.6 x 2.3 mm) shows an isolated anatase crystal 0.25 mm on edge in the center, with many more, some slightly larger, scattered about and inter-grown. The clear catapleiite crystals in the upper right hand corner are about 1 mm in size. Catapleiite and a bit of natrolite are just minor accessories on this specimen.

The second pair of photos (FOV 3.4 x 2.3 mm) shows  more catapleiite and anatase crystals. The largest anatase is < 0.3 mm.

The third pair of photos (FOV 2.3 x 3.4 mm) shows the area richest in the light to dark gray parisite-(Ce). The barrel shaped crystal at right center is 0.5 mm.

The fourth pair of photos (FOV 2.5 x 2.3 mm) shows some of the largest parisite crystals. The one in the center is 0.75 mm tall. Note also the yellow, transparent, tabular (!) siderite crystal on the left. That crystal is 0.5 mm on edge. Behind it are some small, very thin, catapleiite  crystals.

Hand held, the specimen looks like something pulled from the bottom of a charcoal grill.

Found 11/01.

Single item shipping weight (no case) is 3.7 oz. Outside the USA, the stated postage and packing rate applies up to a total weight of 8 oz (225 g).

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
