Description

A fine ruby specimen from less known locality in Northern Macedonia. Marble quarry Sivec north-east of Macedonian town Prilep is occasionally producing ruby crystals in respectable dimensions. The largest known crystals were weighting up to 3 kg.

The majority of rubies from this quarry do not have recognizable crystallographic shapes, and only some display a distinctive hexagonal shape. Rubies from this locality are highly prized for their size and shape, as well as their rich pink red color, and many end up cut into cabochons for gemological use. With Prilep rubies one can find diaspore, muscovite, rutile, dolomite, calcite and fluorite.

The specimen presented here is composed of six intergrown hexagonal ruby crystals and comes from my personal collection. I acquired it 20 years ago from local collector Zvonko in Prilep. At its edge there is a contact to muscovite and quartz that are uncommon for the locality. Limonite stains visible on the surface can be removed by solvents. Under the UV light ruby crystals fluoresce in intense pink-red color.
