The mineral was named in honour of Gábor Koller (b. 1975), a prominent figure of the Hungarian mineral collecting community since 1995. He has found more than 30 mineral species new for the territory of Hungary. He was also the discoverer of the new mineral species rudabányaite (IMA 2016-088).
