Description

Thulite is the „National Stone of Norway“ and has been used as gemstone and for the manufacturing of gemstone products since many years. There a several different occurences of thulite in Norway, each with its specific characteristics.

Samples from this thulite occurence, however, are probably missing in most mineral collections as it is situated in far remote terrain, difficult to access by foot in other months than July/August due to coverage by snow. It was discovered in 1991 and investigated and drilled by the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) in 1994. This specimen here originates from these investigations. It is an intensely dark pink, almost purple coloured thulite specimen whith neglegible amounts of feldspar or quartz, but micaceous and with schistose structure.
