Description

Gold ore specimen hosting a vein consisting mostly of pyrite/chalcopyrite and galena in a metamorphous, quartz-bearing mica schist.

Schellgaden is an ancient gold mining area, worked intermittently from 1354 until around 1900. The deposits are hosted by highly metamorphous quartzites, micaschists and amphibolites. Gold and silver were associated to sulphidic ores which formed layers in quartz. They did occur both freely crystallized and as inclusions in sulphides.

On picture 2, there's quite surely a small speck of free gold near the center, with green malachite in the neighbourhood.

A rare alpine locality specimen from austria, comes with copy of antique label (the original label was gone with the first of two specimen, appr. one year ago).
