Description

Ore gangue specimen hosting stannite frozen in quartz. The usually grey stannite either shows metallic iridescence in different colors (blue, but also golden, see pic 1) or there is accompanying chalcopyrite.

A rare australian oldie which comes with nice old Dr. F. Krantz pen and ink label dated after 1900.

Although not listed in mindat, there are some references to be found for the Ivanhoe mine in the stannary hills area, thus the location seems to be authentic. According to "Regional and Economic Geology of the Herberton/Mount Garnet Area-Herberton Tinfie1d, North Queensland by D. BLAKE [AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT PUBLISHING SERVICE CANBERRA 1972]", Stannite has been recorded at the Ivanhoe and Lass O'Gowrie mines; the boom period for the area was between 1900 and 1910, when Stannary Hills had a population of several hundred people.
