Description

A nice terminated, perfectly clear smoky quartz crystal from the Val Giuv (Graubünden), that is very rich in forms. The faces on the front, below the rhombohedral face of the tip, are two positive left trigonal trapezohedral to the left, and a steep positive rhombohedral face to the right. The upper right face has a horizontally oriented edge to the rhombohedral face at the tip and to the hexagonal face below, and that alone qualifies it as rhombohedral face.

The irregular lines on the surface are not twin boundaries, but "sutures" that indicate boundaries between slightly displaced blocks inside the structure. Quartz collectors call this macroscopically visible lineage or block structure "macromosaic structure”. This is typical for quartz crystals from pegmatite and alpine-type fissure environments. Nice attractive piece of a classic Alpine locality, with minor erosions at the end.

Acquired in 1978. Ex Jan Sibtsen #33.

Thanks to Dr. Amir C. Akhavan with the help in the definitions of forms with this specimen.
