Description

Malacon is a variety of zircon where the crystals are totally or partially altered into white coloured, opaque zircon. This is due to radioactive radiation from surrounding minerals destroying the crystal lattice of zircon and the incorporation of water into the lattice later.

Here we have a 1 cm textbook crystal on a matrix of feldspar and mica demonstrating very well the alteration (white areas) partially along defined crystal structures, best visible at the top of the crystal.

This specimen is not radioactive.

From the Urstad feldspar mine on the island of Hidra, formerly called Hitterø, where pegmatites were mined until the beginning of the last century.
