Description

This specimen is truly quite something!

Back in the early 2010s there had been a find at the legendary Hilarion mine of allegedly linarite. Shortly after supplying the (fairly limited) material to a couple of dealers, analyses (not mine) showed that the lustrous blue crystals were azurite. While the interest by dealers dropped relatively quickly, the specimens became quite sought-after due to the unusual paragenesis. Analyses (again, not mine) showed that the azurite was associated to pitch black, botryoidal honessite and apple green, sometimes dark green agardite-(Ce).

This specimen is one of the most intriguing from that very paragenesis, as there is a neat color contrast with the underlying pale dolomite, but also because crystals stand out and they are mostly in mint conditions. Furthermore, there are some pale pseudomorphs of an unknownd phase (possibly dolomite?) after idiomorphic azurite crystals of great quality, which make an excellent subject for photomicrography.

Excellent quality and outstanding color contrast, among the best available from Lavrion.

As a 'cherry on top', I purchased the specimen from the stock of Minernet, a now-closed dealing company of the Italian legendary collecting duo Respino-Maggia.
