Description

Massive so-called "Rotheisenstein", an old german synonym referring on the red stroke and dust of this type of hematite.

A rare historic specimen which comes with on-glued antique label dated 1850-1866. The locality "Lampistsloch" on the label is likely a transcription error for the small village "Lampertsloch", Département Bas-Rhin, France. I did not find any reference for mining activities right there, but goethite is described for Weissenburg which is only 10 kms away.

Louis Sæmann was born in Görlitz, Saxony, on November 11, 1821. He began as a fossil collector and worked for Adam August Krantz (1808-1872) in Berlin before opening his own competing shop in Paris in 1850. He was apparently well versed in the science of mineralogy, and wroter of various paleontological studies as well. He died in Paris, France as early as September 13, 1866, and his mineral business was then purchased by his old mentor, Adam Krantz in Bonn.
