Bad Friedrichshall, Heilbronn, Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
6.2 × 5.6 × 5.2 cm
Description

This in part blue halite specimen comes from a classic german locality: the Jagstfeld saline was operated until the very late 19th century when the shaft of the mine collapsed due to a flooding with water and a new mine was opened in the direct vicinity. It belongs to the Bad Friedrichshall/Heilbronn salt mining district (today there is a visitors mine - König Wilhelm II (Kochendorf Mine) in Kochendorf and an operating mine in Heilbronn (Heilbronn Mine) which are connected to each other). Specimens from Jagstfeld are almost impossible to obtain and this one has suffered a bit during the decades, it was stored in a locker at Krantz - all edges are smoothed due to dissolution by air humidity (i just wiped the dust off this one) and the label (which could be from the Kreissler collection) is damaged by recrystallized salt. The blue colour in parts of the sample is caused by colloidal sodium which formed due to natural radiation. Blue salt was and still is extremely rare in Bad Friedrichshall/Heilbronn.
