Description

Graphite or Acheson graphite from the Ringesdorfwerke, Mehlem, Bonn

Coking of carbonaceous materials produces graphitizable carbons. Starting substances are, for example, lignite, hard coal, petroleum and pitch, but also plastics. During graphitization, heating to about 3000 °C in the absence of air results in a conversion from amorphous carbon to polycrystalline graphite. Man-made graphite is also known as Acheson graphite.
