Description

A small gold flake on iron-stained quartz matrix, visible under a loupe only.

From a rare italian locality, the Tagliata mine, Toppa Valley, Pieve Vergonte (Verbano-Cusio-Ossola), Piedmont, Italy. Gold mining started here at the beginning of 19th century. Significant amounts of gold were mined in the Toppa valley in the 1860's:
1864 – Production 509 oz
1865 – Production 574 oz
1866 – Production 1400 oz
The mining activities ceased in 1947.
