An important historic sample from modern Colombia: Grains of chalcopyrite and small gold nuggets in a test glass with cork stopper and on-glued antique sticker. The sticker in french language means: "Or et pyrites de cuivre - Novita - Nlle [abbr. for 'Nouvelle'] Granada" (Gold and chalcopyrite - Novita - New Granada).

From: A New Universal Gazetteer Or Geographical Dictionary Containing a description of the various countries, provinces, cities, towns, seas, lakes, rivers, mountains, capes etc. in the known world (Jedidiah Morse, Richard Cary Morse, New Haven 1823): "Novita, province, New Granada, lying between Choco, Antioquia, Rapasa and the Pacific"

The Republic of New Granada was once a spanish viceroyalty, founded in 1717, consisting primarily of present-day Colombia and Panama with smaller portions of today's Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru, and Brazil. After the independence of the viceroyalty kingdoms in 1810, the current Republic of Colombia initially took the name New Grenada until 1819 as part of Greater Colombia. After the dissolution of Greater Colombia by the secession of Venezuela and Ecuador in 1830 the name of the former viceroyalty was still used for Colombia until 1861. Thus, the sample can be dated to mid or early 19th century.
