Glendon, Hunter River, Durham County, New South Wales, Australia

Single Crystal
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)

5.9 × 2 × 1.3 cm
Description

Floater brown calcite crystal (variety glendonite) from glendon the locality when it was first described. These have been considered traditionally as pseudomorphs after ikaite. However, data reported by Rogov and Zakharov (2010) indicate that glendonites are probably formed in deep-water facies and the overall paleoclimate could have reflected a period of high-frequency climate oscillations. Also, Geptnera, et al. (2014) have shown that glendonites could be formed with the contribution of bacterial communities.

This extraordinary specimen is undamaged and it was in my own collection since 1996.
