Germanium Quartz

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Tsumeb Mine, Otavi Highlands, Namibia
Class:
Crystals on Matrix
Size Range:
Micromount (under 1cm)
Size:
0.8 × 0.5 × 0.3 cm
Description

Very rare, yet only described as a synthetic mineral. This specimen has massive germanite as hosting rock, with cavity filled with germanium rich quartz around plumbogummite/galloplumbogummite. If you have a look at your periodic table you will see, that it is possible for the oxidation states and also for the ion radius, that Si can be replaced by Ge. Same works for galloplumbogummite, which has replaced Al3+ by Ga3+.

I have yet only found this specimen, but further cracking will probably yield more interesting specimens.

The specimens title "Germanium Quartz" serves as a placeholder for Germanian quartz, or quartz with germanium content.
