Description

An uvarovite specimen, according to the old label from a historic place at the south coast of turkey ("Kleinasien" is an old synonym for more or less the area of modern turkey). The city appears as "Telmissos or Anastasioupolis" (after imperator Anastasios II) ca. in 800. By the 10th century, the ancient name was forgotten and it became known in 1424 as Makre or Makri (Μάκρη, "long one", turkish Meğri), from the name of the island at the entrance to the harbour. In 1934, the city was renamed 'Fethiye' in honor of Yüzbaşı Fethi Bey, one of the first pilots of the Ottoman Air Force, killed in 1914 by Al-Samra.

The specimen features minute uvarovite crystals on chromite matrix. Uvarovite is not described for this area, but only from far-away Guleman Mines, Guleman, Elazig Province and Kop Krom mine, Kop Daglari, Erzurum Province. Nevertheless an interesting garnet specimen from an unusual locality!
