Description

An odd specimen hosting dark brown masses of garnet (looks more like some kind of chalcedony or common opal) in matrix rock.

Comes with old label in french language dated to the 19th century and on-glued corresponding number sticker. The label means: "Grénats dans un quartz résinite empatant des polypiers - Colonie Victoria, Australia" (garnets in a resinous quartz including corals - Colony Victoria, Australia). The fossil structures are clearly visible on pic 2 & 3.

"Colonie Victoria" surely means the area around Melbourne that was to become the modern state of Victoria, Australia with the capital Melbourne (founded 1835), thus dated to mid 19th century.
An odd but interesting historic specimen.
