Description

Almost unnoticed in Sainte-Marie last year an exhibitor offered very beautiful, glossy pyrite aggregates with belemnite backbones - a new find from a Caucasian river bed. The 'belemnite' was replaced by flint, whereas the rotting flesh of the squid provided the neccessary sulphur - in combination with a ferruos invoronment - for the growing of the pyrite crystals. A very odd and extraordinary specimen. The pyrite is very nice, much glossier than the pictures can show.

The tip has been repaired (I broke it myself and glued it back in place - sigh!), but that's not a big minus for a fossil like this.
