Description

Piece of black, glassy obsidian showing white inclusions of "Krahlite", a mixture of orthoclase + plagioclase + quartz [Chester 147 (1892)]. "Krahlite" was described by Prof. Dr. Forchhammer in "Neues Jahrbuch für Mineralogie, Geognosie, Geologie und Petrefakten-Kunde 1844. "Im Obsidian von Hrafntinnabruggr auf Island finden sich rothe Kugeln mit konzentrisch-strahligem Gefüge, diese werden Krahlit genannt" (In the obsidian of Hrafntinnabruggr, Iceland, reddish spheres with concentric-radiating structure were found, they are called Krahlit).

This is a very old specimen, coming with a rare label from old Dr. A. Krantz dated to 1830-1850. The company's location "Berlin" at the bottom of the label gives a hint that the specimen dates back before the movement from Berlin to Bonn in 1850. The most of these old "Berlin" labels show a canceled "Berlin" and subsequent stamped "Bonn" for the new head office location.
