Description

This is a fine specimen of cuprite with native copper from a rarely seen locality on Cuba island, most likely from the El Cobre Mine. This mine is located 9 miles west of Santiago de Cuba - Copper was first mined here in 1532.
The cuprite forms lustrous cubic crystals up to 0.8 cm on edge, the copper exists in "spongy" form and small crystals.

Comes with antique label of an unknown collection and new C. Rewitzer collection label. The old German label says Cuba "in the West Indies", it surely dates to the 1800's. "Rothkupfererz" is an old german synonym for cuprite. A very rare specimen.
