Description

This is a flat specimen consisting of solid fibrous, pale yellow-green chrysotile asbestos from a vein.

Comes with two old labels of Eugenio Bazzi (1862-1929) and Luigi Bardelli (1869-1905) plus on-glued corresponding number sticker.

The latter was born in Milan, Italy. He became a chemist at the Superior Technical Institute of Milan, and was well known for an interesting paper, published in 1895, about some discoveries dealing with lead ore from the Coiromonte mines (Ameno Municipality, Novara Province). Three years after Luigi Bardelli's death in 1905 (at Ameno), his widow Ida married Giuseppe Garbari, and the Bardelli collection was incorporated into the Garbari collection. Garbari's mineral collection was finally sold to the firm of Friedrich Krantz in Bonn, Germany, and was then dispersed to many private and institutional collections.

Eugenio Bazzi was an Italian engineer, industrialist and well-known mineral collector in Milan. He was very active in field collecting. The Bazzi collection included several thousand mineral and rock specimens, some of them dating back to the young Bazzi's collecting years in the early 1900's. It included a systematic collection and several regional collections (Vesuvius, Gothard, Baveno, Val d'Ala, Brosso and Traversella, Saint Marcel, Cuasso al Monte, Sardinia). In 1937 Prof. Emanuele Grill of the University of Milan proposed to purchase the collection from Bazzi's estate. His proposal was accepted and Bazzi's collection was acquired in 1939 for 45,000 lire (cit. minrec).
