Description

In an area with such a strong oxidation zone (gossan) such as Lavrion, finding sulphides is indeed a rarity.

This specimen comes from one of the few areas somehow off the main gossan, where the main mineralization was given by sphalerite-galena gangue on a quartz-carbonate laden matrix. The specific specimen is quite representative of this paragenesis, and still shows some interesting aspects.
Sphalerite var. marmatite is well-formed, jet black, quite lustrous, with some twinned individuals and it usually lies on a matrix of microcrystalline pyrite. Galena is present although is partially replaced (mostly epimorphed) by a thin crust of white crystalline cerussite.

If you are looking for something unusual and intriguing, this is definitely your specimen!
From my personal mineral collection.
