Description

Ore specimen consisting of grey matrix rock with veins and crusts of dull, light green chrysocolla (old german synonym "Kieselkupfer") and bright lustous cerussite (old german synonym "Weißbleierz").

Comes with beautiful old label dated 1873! The label means: "Weißbleierz mit Kieselkupfer von der Juliengrube in Ober Rochlitz in Böhmen. Geschenk des Herrn Prof. Fritzsche 18/7 73" (Cerussite with chrysocolla from Julien pit in Ober Rochlitz (Horní Rokytnice) in Bohemia. Gift of Prof. Fritzsche July 18, 1873).

Franz Wilhelm Fritzsche was born in Zwickau on December 3, 1811 and studied from 1829 to 1835 at the Bergakademie (mining college) Freiberg, Saxony, Germany. He then worked at the metallurgical plants at Freiberg as an assistant. In 1849 he became a "bureau of metallurgical plants assesor" (Hüttenamtsassessor) and in 1856 he was appointed professor for metallurgy and assaying at the well-known Freiberg mining college, Saxony, Germany. He became an "Oberhüttenamtsassessor" and then "Bergrat" (counsellor of mines) in 1873. He finished his teaching activities in 1873 and died near Freiberg in February 27, 1892.
