Cassiterite

Floater

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Mumba Cassiterite Gravels, Mumba, Masisi Mountains, North Kivu, DR Congo
Class:
Single Crystal
Size Range:
Small miniature (3-4.5 cm)
Size:
4 × 3.8 × 2.6 cm
Description

Very rare to see in the market, this is a heavy thick complete crystal of cassiterite with slightly rounded edges and corners due to some transport and erosion. These specimens were historically recovered from old fluvial terraces at the Mumba area, worked for cassiterite. I have only seen a handful of these, and few of this quality, where the tetragonal morphology is perfectly recognized.

It is a floater piece, free of damages, from the collection of Achiel Moors, a Belgian mineral collector who lived in Congo between 1957 and 1972.
