Description

Hüttenberg is an old, historic mining area – iron was mined there. Really of relevance in it´s history – do you know boric iron? The high quality iron (ferrum noricum) , which was used for Roman Army came from Hüttenberg and Erzberg. First mentioned in old documents from 1266! But we know about mining even before the old Romans, so this is really a historic locality. The particular specimen is on highest standard for Huettenberg. It consists of very large inter grown Siderite crystals, which are covered by botryoidal Chalcedony. Chalcedony shows pearl-like, satiny luster. It shows to colors, underneath it seems to be beige, than covered by light blue layer. Finally you can still see the habit of some calcite crystals which were developed on siderite, these are completely replaced by chalcedony (so this specimen is even pseudomorph). No significant damages to report, backside was on the rock.
