Description

Three tiny gold specks associated with bismutite, kettnerite and other unidentified sky-blue and grey-greenish to yellow minerals, likely bismuth minerals (bismite, bismuthinite...) as matrix. Surely worth an analysis of the complete mineral composition.

Despite its small size, for the locality it is a rich specimen because one usually gets only one gold speck per piece.

This is a VERY rare and hard-to-get locality specimen from ancient Lavrion mines, Attika, Greece. The area was mined since the egyptian age and most intensively from 600 B.C. to 100 A.D., for silver, lead and other metals. The Lavrion mines were the main source of wealth for the city of Athens during the classical times (5th-4th century B.C.). They were abandoned during the Roman times and reopened in 1865. All mining activity ceased in 1984.

This specimen comes from the 2nd level of the Jean Baptiste mine from a locality named locally "ασπρα χωματα" ("white soil"). This place has been studied by e.g.: Solomos, C., Voudouris, P., and Katerinopoulos, A. (2004) Mineralogical studies of bismuth-gold-antimony mineralization at the area of Kamariza, Lavrion. Bulletin of the Geological Society of Greece 34, Proceedings of the 10th International Congress, Thessaloniki, Greece, 387-396 (in Greek with English abstract).
