Santa Catharina Meteorite, Morro do Rócio, São Francisco do Sul, Santa Catarina, Brazil
Class:
Crystals on Matrix
Size Range:
Micromount (under 1cm)
Size:
0.4 × 0.3 × 0.2 cm
Description

Pale green blue crystals of the extremely rare nickel mineral arupite from the type locality and only one of the two known localities worldwide, the Santa Catharina meteorite (found in 1875; 7 tons recognized and recovered).

The meteorite is unusual in 3 important respects — it is

(1) unusually nickel rich (~30 wt% of unoxidized portions)

(2) unusually troilite-rich, and
(3) very severely weathered.

Arupite is the nickel analogue of vivianite, but of course it is much more rarer.
