Aragonite In Gypsum

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Colmenar de Oreja, Madrid, Spain
Class:
Crystals on Matrix
Size Range:
Small miniature (3-4.5 cm)
Size:
3.1 × 2.5 × 1.6 cm
Description

Prismatic twinned aragonite crystals of yellow colour, in a matrix of sacaroidal gypsum of Miocene age. I collected these pieces in 1991 in just one block of about 10x10 cm, and the XRD analyses that I performed in 1998 in the Complutense University of Madrid showed to be aragonite. This was the first recorded reference of aragonite in the Madrid Region.

Under UV illumination they display a strong fluorescence, and the main crystal reach 8 mm, which is very big for the find.

Ex Iván Blanco collection.
