Description

The Belvidere Mountain Quarries are well known for exceptional specimens of grossular. But they also produced very good specimens of several other minerals, including clinozoisite, the mineral featured on this specimen. As on this specimen, the terminations are often compound or serrated, but the crystals can be quite attractive - in some ways perhaps more so than crystals with simple terminations. The largest crystals on this specimen are ca 1 cm high. They grow in a matrix of fibrous amphibole. I am no expert on this quarry, but judging from other photos posted elsewhere, the amphibole is probably fibrous tremolite. (The fibers are not asbestos, although that was certainly the raison d’être for the quarries.)

The first pair of photos shows most of the clinozoisite on the specimen. The next photo presents a slightly different view of the same crystals.

The next pair of photos (FOV 6.9 x 4.5 mm) is a close-up of one crystal, of which 6.7 mm is visible. This is not the largest crystal on the specimen, but it illustrates the compound terminations particularly well.

The next pair of photos (FOV 4.1 x 6.0 mm) is a close-up of some more compound-terminated crystals. About 4.0 mm of the rear crystal is visible.

The next-to-last photo is a full view of the “front” of the specimen.

The last photo shows part of the “back” side.

Single item shipping weight (with TN case) is 3.4 oz (96 g). For shipments outside the USA, up to a total weight < 8 oz (225g), this can be combined with items from this or other auctions for the same postage.

Within the USA, postage for total weights up to 13 oz ranges from $4.25 to $6.50 (including packing etc) regardless of destination. Above 13 oz, I will use “own box” Priority Mail. The rate, including packing, varies by destination from $7.25 to $9.50.

See my updated “Shipping Policy” for details.

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
