Description

Slab of high grade gold-silver ore from the Maria vein of the Karangahake deposit. The vein has outer bands of dark grey very fine-grained acanthite plus chalcopyrite that is overgrown by a central fill of milky white cryptocrystalline quartz. The vein has selvages of intensely altered porphyritic andesite. The Karangahake epithermal gold-silver deposit was mined from 1887 to 1928 and was the third largest producer of gold in the Hauraki goldfield.
