Native Silver In Acanthite

Classic Locality

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
6.2 × 5 × 2 cm
Description

An old specimen literally riddled with wire silver in a matrix of acanthite galena and pyrite. The native silver is tarnished in places but quite bright in other spots, and is best appreciated under magnification.

The high silver content of the Broken Hill orebody was the original cause of so much excitement in the early 1890's and ore like this would have sent assay values crazy no doubt.
