Description

We offer up for auction a thumbnail of the new mineral bonacinaite, the first naturally occurring scandium arsenate and an extremely rare phase found at old Varenche manganese mine in the Italian Alps.

Though ideally colorless, bonacinaite takes a light lilac hue thanks to manganese impurities, which makes it visible in the complex association (thortveitite, arseniopleite and wallkilledellite). This specimen is host to a rounded globule and a farily well-formed tabular crystal 0.1 mm across. A good 50x bino and "warm" light source are recommended to enjoy the specimen.

From our personal 2016 find, that yielded a handful of specimens that helped in determination of this difficult species.

The mineral has just been approved (IMA 2018-056) and dedicated to Enrico Bonacina, mentor and dean of Italian photograpers of the mineral micro world.
