Ferdowsiite & Chabournéite

Rare Mineral

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Sant'Olga Tunnel, Monte Arsiccio Mine, Sant'Anna di Stazzema, Lucca Province, Tuscany, Italy
Class:
Massive/Crystalline
Size Range:
Small miniature (3-4.5 cm)
Size:
0.7 × 3.8 × 2.2 cm
Description

A rich specimen of two very rare Ag and Tl sulfosalts (analyzed), intergrown in a compact, cm-sized vein in baryte-pyrite ore. Both minerals are dark grey with metallic lustre, but ferdowsiite has a typical glass-like fracture while chabournéite (picture 3) has a more distinct cleavage, resulting in a "scaly" look on the fresh fracture. The strange matrix shape is due to a pre-existing drill hole.

Self-collected 2017. Old Monte Arsiccio mine is the third world locality for ferdowsiite, and the fourth for chabournéite.
