Classic Locality

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Bellsgrove Mine, Strontian, Highland, Scotland, United Kingdom
Class:
Crystals on Matrix
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
4.5 × 4.1 × 2.4 cm
Description

Despite the Bellsgrove Mine is not the type locality of sought silicate Harmotome (this is St. Andreasberg in Germany) it is in any case among the most historic localities for the species. This is a classic, old-time specimen of multifaced, lustrous, pearlescent Harmotome crystals to 1.0 cm on matrix from this famous mine at Strontian, Scotland. Harmotome is a rare zeolite group mineral and the major crystal is textbook formed. New ones came out recently in the late 1990s, but the older ones, to my mind, are better as they have more robust and isolated crystals as you see here.
