Description

This is a petrified sea urchin from the limestone quarry near Höver in Lower Saxony. The shell of the sea urchinis made of calcite and tiny pyrite crystals. The interior of the sea urchin is made of limestone. Very easy to recognize is the mouth of the sea urchin. (Arrows). The fossil is sawn in the middle. In some sea urchins there is quartz, in others calcite or celestine. Very rarely, petroleum is contained. The fossil is about 75 million years old.
